Cognac is a city of Charente, a department in the Poitou-Charentes region of western France. The inhabitants of the city are called "Cognaçais". Cognac is situated on the river Charente between the towns of Angoulême and Saintes. The majority of the city was built on the left bank of the river, with the smallest area on the right bank, known as the Saint Jacques. The city is located on one of the pilgrimage routes to Saint Jacques de Compostela.

History of Cognac

Unknown before the ninth century, the city was fortified thereafter. During the Hundred Years War, the town changed sides several times due to fighting and treaties in the region. François I granted the town the right to trade salt along the river, which ensures solid commercial success, which in turn led to the development of the city as a center of wine and brandy later. The best eau-de-vie is known world of the peaceful countryside along the river Charente, one hundred and twenty kilometers north of Bordeaux. This slow moving river that King François I called the most beautiful river in his kingdom, through a peaceful landscape of vineyards bathed in bright light and radiant. An area called the "golden circle" of cognac production encompasses Cognac and has the second-largest city distillation Jarnac. Cognac, the medieval city which bears the name of the region is attractive with its narrow cobbled medieval streets and elegant Renaissance facades. It is here that the legendary nectar has been established since the 17th century and all the air we breathe is permeated by the heavy odor of liquor that evaporates from oak barrels placed in storage: this perfume is recognized under the name of "angels' share". Famous companies in the world as Camus, Hennessy, Martell, Otard, Prince Hubert de Polignac, Rémy Martin, Courvoisier, and Renault-Bisquit are located here, each distillery has its own secret and unique process to mix its different eaux-de- life. Take a tour to learn more about the double distillation process carried out in copper stills before the aging in oak barrels where the precious liquor will improve, taking its finale and the famous Golden glow . Take a barge or train and discover the history of cognac vineyards, distilleries and museums that will show you not only how it is made, but proudly the oldest reserve of cognacs dating back to 1830.
