Agen is a commune in the Lot-et-Garonne department in Aquitaine in southwestern France. It lies on the river Garonne 84 miles southeast of Bordeaux. It is the capital of the department. The town has a higher level of unemployment than the national average. Major employers include UPSA, the pharmaceutical factory.

HISTORY OF AGEN

Agen's history dates back to the 4th century, but unfortunately nothing is left of the town of that period except for a few statues, mosaics which are now part of the exhibition in Town's Museum. By 11th century Agen has been reduced to a cluster of fortified islands as a result of numerous invasions by Germanic, Norse and Arab tribes.

In 1032 Agen became a part of the State of Aquantine. In 1137 the Duchess of Aquitaine became a Queen of France and then in 1152 she became a Queen of England. During the next 300 years the city of Agen was controlled either by the Duke of Aquitaine (who was also a King of England) and the King of France. Finally after the Hundred Years War has ended, Agen was definitively annexed by France in 1453.
